Reiki is performed by a practitioner who delivers therapy through her hands with the goal of raising the amount of “ki”—life force energy—in and around the receiver.

What happens during a Reiki session?

• The fully clothed receiver sits or lies down on the back. If lying down, the receiver will roll over onto the stomach for treatment on the back.

• The practitioner’s hands are either placed on, or a few inches above, the receiver’s body.

• There are between 12 and 15 different hand positions from the head down to the feet.

• The practitioner holds each hand position for two to five minutes until the flow of energy has steadied.

• After the treatment, the practitioner is available to discuss the receiver’s experiences.

• Treatments generally last one hour.

• Distance Reiki sessions may be performed with the practitioner and receiver at separate locations.
